An update on Living with Lions: Talk by Alex Hettena, ACR research associate

Oct 3 2019 - 1:00pm to 1:30pm
Cloverdale Rotary

Rotary Club of Cloverdale hosts a talk by Alex Hettena, ACR research associate, who will give an update on ACR's Living with Lions program.

Please note: this talk is for Rotary Club members only and is not open to the public.

About Alex Hettena: Prior to joining our Living with Lions team, Alex participated in field studies with mule deer at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, CO, white-lipped peccaries in Brazil, jaguars and pumas in Paraguay, degus (bush-tailed rats) in Chile, and gray wolves in northeastern Washington. Her research interests include carnivore-human interaction, specifically the carnivore-livestock conflict, with a greater goal of carnivore conservation. Alex holds a master’s degree from Pace University and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Vanderbilt University.

Prescribed Fire Workshop

Audubon Canyon Ranch Event Calendar

Prescribed Fire Workshop

Oct 5 2019 - 10:00am to 2:00pm
Monan's Rill Community Building

Cooperative Prescribed Burning with The Good Fire Alliance
(Sonoma's Prescribed Burn Association)

The Forest Working Group invites you to a day of learning with the Good Fire Alliance. This alliance of private landowners, NGOs, land trusts and parks work to restore their forests' health and resilience to wildfires primarily by putting "good fire," or prescribed fire, on the land. The Good Fire Alliance also assists in prescribed grazing, home hardening and other vegetation management strategies to restore ecologically resilient and safe communities. Work is achieved through a "neighbors helping neighbors" approach.

Who should attend: The Forest Working Group's members, any forest landowner and interested public

What will we do: Take a tour of two cooperatively burned private woodlands (spring 2018 and summer 2019), see a forest thinning project, and discuss how new members can participate in the Good Fire Alliance.

**For our West Marin community members**

A 9.5 acre controlled burn of Douglas fir forest is planned on Martin Griffin Preserve near Stinson Beach in the near future. Please join us Monday, Oct 7, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at an informational meeting to learn more about the planning and partnerships in place as well as the objectives of this controlled burn. Presenters include Dr. Sasha Berleman & Brian Peterson of our Fire Forward team, Marin County Fire Captain Jordan Reeser, and Gwen Heistand, the preserve manager and resident biologist at Martin Griffin Preserve.

Date: October 7, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

4900 Shoreline Highway 1, Stinson Beach
RSVP: fireforward@egret.org or 415.868.9244 ext. 313

--Reducing the fuel load along the Bourne Ridge--

ACR’s land and stewardship managers intend to conduct a series of controlled burns over coming years on the Bourne Ridge to create a fire break, increase ecological resilience and meet regional fire safety goals. The ecosystem of the Bourne Ridge has changed rapidly in recent history, converting from a coastal prairie to a young and very dense Douglas fir forest with limited understory and tree diversity and a heavy fuel load. To reduce this fuel load and open up patches of coastal prairie among the existing oak trees, our stewardship team has been thinning young Douglas firs in this area. Following this work with controlled burns will promote greater diversity of native plants as well as a forest structure that promotes lower intensity fires.

Light refreshments will be served. Parking is very limited, please carpool.

Dr. Martins has over 20 years of field experience in wilderness areas throughout much of Africa, Saudi Arabia and the USA. His work highlights the manner in which charismatic and iconic apex predators like leopards and mountain lions, act as umbrella species, and can lead to broad ecosystem conservation.
