Promoting a conservation ethic in people of all ages is central to our mission of Conservation in Action. Audubon Canyon Ranch offers exploration and learning opportunities for nature enthusiasts of all ages on three of its preserves: the Martin Griffin Preserve, the Bouverie Preserve and the Modini Mayacamas Preserves.

Join us on the preserves to explore seasonal changes, observe nesting birds and migrating newts, learn about native peoples' use of the land, hike past wildflower meadows and through redwood groves. Visitation is limited on all three preserves in order to ensure that human impact is kept in balance with land and habitat preservation goals.

Nature Guide Training

ACR Nature Guides interpret the natural environment of Martin Griffin Preserve and its many unique natural features for weekend visitors. 

Our next nature guide training will occur over nine Saturdays beginning March 9, 2019. Learn about birds, plants, aquatic critters, Bolinas Lagoon ecology and more! Training includes techniques for interpreting natural history and leading guided nature walks.

ACR’s Nature Guide program is an ideal opportunity for working professionals and college students to spend time in nature and gain hands-on field experience. Volunteer times are on weekends and holidays and are flexible.

Guided Nature Walk

Bouverie Preserve

Experience the beauty and rich natural history of this 535-acre preserve. Our guided nature walks are on Saturdays throughout fall and spring. Participants are divided into small groups and paired with a trained Bouverie volunteer to explore the mixed evergreen forest and flower-carpeted oak woodland. Guided Nature Walks begin at 10:00am and end at 12:00pm and are no more than 2.5 miles long.

Visitors of all ages are welcome. In order to attend a Guided Nature Walk or Twilight Hike, minors (those under the age of 18) MUST be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

$20 per person suggested donation. Contributions support the preservation, education and conservation science programs of Audubon Canyon Ranch. All donations are greatly appreciated!

Wildfire Fuel Break Workshop

Take a tour of shaded fuel break, do some hands-on work and learn: 

  • How shaded fuel breaks (a.k.a. forested fire breaks) can help reduce fuel loads and provide a safer area for firefighters to make a stand against wildfire.
  • How to plan and implement a shaded fuel break to help protect your home and forestland.
  • The various methods used and associated costs to establish a shaded fuel break.
  • How local agencies and organizations can help you plan, cost-share, and implement your shaded fuel break.
  • Examples of how prescribed fire can be used to maintain your shaded fuel break once established.

Location: Jenner Headlands Preserve. Note: Participants will carpool from Duncans Mills. Meet at 10am in Duncans Mills just past general store by the monterey cypress trees.

Cost: FREE to landowners and land managers.

Gear: Dress for field work -- shoes/boots with good tread, long pants and long-sleeves, layers recommended. Bring work gloves, water, hat and sunscreen.

Lunch will be provided to workshop participants. Bring water for yourself.

Opening Day Celebration with David Herlocker Join us on May 4th as we celebrate the first day of our short summer season!

Renowned local naturalist David Herlocker will be providing guided hikes at 11am and 2pm. David has been leading walks and giving presentations on natural history for over 30 years. He has been giving docent trainings and other walks and talks at Martin Griffin and Bouverie preserves for the last 20 years. He recently retired from his position as the Interpretive Naturalist for Marin County Parks which involved providing several walks a week all over Marin County that focused on all aspects of nature. Read about his celebrated hikes and love of nature here!

Can’t make the hikes? Come explore with us! Join our volunteer Nature Guides and grab a pair of binoculars or peer in the scopes to watch osprey dive for fish and eagles disrupt the waterbirds over the Bolinas Lagoon. Grab a net and scoop a newt at our freshwater ponds. Come out to our kids’ tables to do activities related to the sights, sounds, and smells of May at Martin Griffin Preserve! No reservation necessary -- please join us!

Docent Orientation / Recruitment Hike

An ACR docent is someone with an abiding love of nature and a desire to share that appreciation & enthusiasm with children aged 8-10. Over the course of 17 Wednesdays beginning in September, docents receive exceptional coursework in the natural history of Northern California’s diverse ecosystems as well as training in the dynamics of working with children in these natural settings. ACR partners with UC Extension’s California Naturalist program.

Join us for an orientation program beginning with a brief overview of the training program and ending with an hour-long hike on the trail. Seasoned Bouverie Preserve docents will lead the hikes and be available to answer questions.

Training begins in September.

Participate in environmental stewardship with Audubon Canyon Ranch at Martin Griffin Preserve! We will be focusing on invasive plant management, so this is a great activity for those who enjoy weeding in the garden. Please bring a lunch, clothes you would garden in, sturdy shoes, and a water bottle. We will provide gloves, snacks, and tools. All experience levels are welcome!

Volunteer stewardship workdays run on select Saturdays from 11am-3pm, we will be meeting at the parking lot at Martin Griffin Preserve in Stinson Beach. Public transportation to the meeting site is available via the West Marin Stagecoach route 61. Anyone is welcome, please RSVP so we know to expect you.
