Hunter Halkovich, pictured above with dog Moxy, is this year’s David Bouverie Scholarship recipient. Hunter has been an active Juniper Junior Naturalist since fifth grade and participated in many newt counts, helped build owl and bat boxes, and mentored younger Junipers. During the pandemic, he presented his work on silk (Polyphemus) moths at a virtual insect extravaganza.

Hunter was selected by the scholarship committee because of his contributions to the Bouverie Preserve as a Junior Naturalist (Juniper) and their confidence that his continued academic and personal pursuits in the sciences will benefit nature and the environment.

As he accepted the award, Hunter expressed his gratitude to the scholarship committee. “I am committed to continuing David Bouverie’s legacy in conserving our environment. [The Juniper program] has made a deep impact on my life and I am grateful that future students will benefit by becoming Junior Naturalists,” he said.

This fall, he will be attending Cornell University where he will begin pursuing a degree in viticulture and enology with a focus on sustainable farming practices.

Congratulations, Hunter!!

About the David Bouverie Scholarship

The David Bouverie Scholarship Fund was established in 2009 with an initial grant of $25,000 from The Dennis and Carol Ann Rockey Fund of the Marin Community Foundation.

The Fund was established in memory of Phyllis Ellman, a longtime ACR Board member and "founding mother" of the Bouverie Preserve’s Environmental Education Program for which she served as a docent from 1980 until her death in June 2009. Phyllis was also one of the founders of the Juniper Program at Bouverie.

The Scholarship Fund provides $1,500 academic scholarships to Junipers who remain involved through high school and plan to pursue higher education or service in the sciences or environmental education.
