Driven by a childhood memory, Marty Griffin tells how he and other local conservationists fought to save hundreds of acres of native habitat and a threatened colony of egrets from a massive development plan.

A nature sanctuary—and the land conservation and environmental education organization now called Audubon Canyon Ranch—is born.
