Documenting Wildlife on the Mayacamas

Feb 12 2017 - 9:00am to 1:00pm
Modini Mayacamas Preserves

Come and spend the morning with ACR Volunteer, Docent and Wildlife Camera Specialist Ginny Fifield to learn about some of the wildlife that inhabits the Modini Mayacamas Preserves. We'll learn about identifying field signs of mountain lions, bobcat, coyotes and more. We will also visit two wildlife trail cameras, where we'll view new unseen photos/videos - to see if the field signs match the pictures! Total hike is about 3 miles. Ginny is a Docent at the Martin Griffin Preserve, and a Modini Mayacamas Preserves Volunteer, with lots of great field and camera experience studying coyotes and mountain lions.

Click here to see past footage from the wildlife cameras.

Check our Meetup page in the morning in case we reschedule due to weather.

Pre-registration is required. Limited to 15 participants. Register through the Modini Mayacamas Preserves Meetup page

Questions? Contact ACR Resource Ecologist David Self or 707.431.8184 or visit the Modini Mayacamas Preserves Meetup page.

Steep, Wild Country, No Facilities, No Pets Please dress for the weather and bring at least one quart of drinking water. You may also wish to bring a hat, an extra layer, and a snack. There are no toilets, no water fountains, no restaurants, no trash collection...this is a primitive and wild place! Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the outing. For hikes you will want shoes that protect your toes and give you good traction on uneven ground, such as sneakers or hiking boots. Please leave your pets at home.

The Modini Mayacamas Preserves This private nature sanctuary, owned and managed by Audubon Canyon Ranch, has a range of different public access opportunities. Pine Flat Road, a public county road with pullouts, meanders through the preserve, allowing visitors to enjoy the views and birdwatching from roadside pullouts anytime without appointment. Please drive very cautiously, this is a one lane winding road with very limited sight lines. The sanctuary also hosts public guided hikes, which are posted on this website's calendar. For independent hiking, attend an orientation sessions, which are also posted here.
